As some of you may know, my SO Ann-Cathrine is an artist[1], and I've
just finished[2] her new, spiffy website:
http://www.catroll-art.co.uk/
*ta-daa* and all that. As always, comments are welcome, both scathing
and kind. At least Sophia should be happy I've made a site with lots of
images. :-)
It was a bit of a hurry to get it finished, since she illustrated a
rather sweet little story in the latest issue of Strange Horizons
(http://www.strangehorizons.com/) and they were asking for a website to
put up with her bio. But I'm reasonably happy with it.
Now, something we've talked a bit about is printing services like
CafePress, and we are both curious to know whether anyone would be
interested in having one of her pictures on a t-shirt, mug, mousemat,
poster and so on. Do you think there's any mileage in that?
I also have a technical question to the clever web developers in the
parish. I've built the site with PHP, both to make it simple to add new
content, and for the fun of it, but I have one problem. In the
thumbnail links, I have two parameters (like
http://www.catroll-art.co.uk/index.php?image=skullgirl&g roup=pencil),
and when I run it through the W3C validator it screams and shouts about
the ampersand there. Is that really correct? I thought you were
allowed to put them inside attribute strings? Is there some way around
it?
[1] She made the illustrations to The Tale, among other things, and for
those curious to see some naked afpers[3] those pictures are available
there.
[2] Well, finished enough to launch, at least. There'll be updates, and
more info, and more pictures, and with any luck a sort of weekly comic
thing as time goes by.
[3] Well, strictly speaking it's her interpretation of the text, in
which there are some characters vaguely inspired by afpers who appear
naked.

I'd say so for sure. *I'm* almost interested in a poster, and drawn art
of this nature really isn't my thing at all usually :-)

The problem there is the XHTML doctype, which requires everything to be
escaped properly. All ampersands, even in URLs, need to be written as
& to validate.
You can use PHP's htmlspecialchars() function for your URLs
<http://uk2.php.net/manual/en/function.htmlspecialchars.php>, or change
your doctype to HTML :-)

Jupp, definitely! Very nice pictures all of them and are all suited for
being posters, IMO, and most of them would be wonderfull to have on
what-ever object might lay around.

Yes, I went out on a limb and financed a small print run, from a
professional printer.
<plug>
The first book of The Tale of Westala and Villtin, Ill in Anorankhmar,
is a 263-page perfect bound paperback printed on high-quality 80gsm
paper, profesionally[1] layouted and containing editor's foreword,
authors' afterword and four original illustrations[2] as well as the
text of The Tale.
The front cover, of laminated 180gsm paper, features an additional
illustration and a genuine quote by a certain mr Pratchett.
http://www.catroll-art.co.uk/index.php?image=iia_cover
The back cover bears a blurb, and an excerpt from a review by the noted
scholar in humorous fantasy, Stacie Hanes M.A.
A special "Extended CD Edition" is also available, containing the full
text to both the original Tale and the prequel novelette "A Midwinter
Tale", a complete list of annotations to both stories[3], posting
statistics and links to all episodes on Google Groups, a map, special
features (including an alternative ending), outtakes and deleted scenes,
and hi-res, print-quality copies of the illustrations ad well as copies
formatted for use as desktop wallpaper.
Both are available to order online at http://tale.cunobaros.com/yots/
where they can be ordered worldwide and securely paid for by credit card
or PayPal.
The book has, since its launch at the Green Man Halloween AfpMeet 2004,
become an international seller, with copies sold to, among others,
England, Scotland, Wales, Netherlands, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway,
USA, Canada and Australia.
[1] Well, the layout was done in a professional application by someone
who has previously done book layout professionally.
[2] By Ann-Cathrine Loo. They are:

[3] The annotations to the original text, as well as the original text
itself, can be found online for free at http://tale.cunobaros.com/ all
nicely webified by Elin/Graycat.
</plug>
Um. Sorry about that, everyone, but Jens seemed to have missed the
whole thing. (If anyone wishes to tell him how nicely produced the book
is, and how few typos there are (I know only of three), rest assured I
won't be embarrassed by your praise. ;-)
I have ten copies left of the book, and when they're gone, they're gone.
Any I have left in August I'll bring to the Con, and with any luck I'll
manage to sell the last ones there, so I can finally reach break-even on
the cost of the books.

But those annotations aren't complete; I've spotted at least two
things it missed. :-)

Unescaped ampersands would be invalid even with HTML...

Imagine that - I wonder how I've failed to notice that before. Probably
because I've never had to have multiple parameters in a URL before, I
imagine. Come to think of it, I have seen links with ampersands in them
so often I kind of assumed it was okay. On Amazon, for instance, you'll
get one in the author links.
Hm... I guess I'll have to muck around and concatenate the parameters in
the URL with some character encoding, extract the resulting string,
convert the magic character to an ampersand again and then get the
parameters with parse_str().
Bummer. Ah, well.

Eh? Assuming a non-broken client, or even (I believe) IE, if your file
contains links like:
<a href="http://example.com/myscript?foo=42&bar=17">
your server should receive the parameters in the same way as if the user
entered:
http://example.com/myscript?foo=42&bar=17
In other words, escaping the & as & does not change the URL, it
merely encodes it. The HTML parser is then required to decode it before
doing anything with it.

That's what I thought when I first saw the error, so I escaped the
ampersand in the script and tested it. This lost the second parameter
completely, though, so I thought it didn't work.
Now that I've been assured it should work, I've tried it again, and lo
and behold it works. I must've put a typo in before. <hangs head in
shame>
I've fixed it now, and a thinko'd missing div closure, so all's fine and
dandy, and the pages are passing XHTML 1.0 Strict validation. Or would,
if the £$&% server would give a charset.
Ho hum.
Thanks for the help.

Ehm, huh? Can't you just pull them from the $_GET array?

I think I've noted a bit more than that. The last few episodes are
completely missing; and this is not because there were no annotations in
those.

Oh, bummer! Well, the annotations for the last few episodes are on the

I'll get around to it soon enough.

Hey, I'm no web developer!
Yes, of course I can, I was just stuck with the false notion that
replacing the & with & in the url would mess up the array. It's
been pointed out that I was in error, and I've fixed it now.
And all is well in the world, except that Google Groups will forever
carry a record of my ignorance. Well, there are a few more problems
too, but the sun's shining and I'll soon be leaving work, with a
pleasant evening of nice food and some RPG-playing to look forward to,
so I'd rather not think of those just now.

FWIW, when I came across people answering questions on
the lines of "Are cafepres products good quality?", the
general trend was "They do well on paper and hard surfaces
(eg. mugs), but not on textiles".

I've just had a T shirt printed by tshirtstudio.com in the UK and I'm
bowled over by the quality and ease of design and ordering. It's one of
Poppy's Cheery Littlebottom cartoons[1] and I plan to wear it at the Con.

I donated one, with a copy of the CD, to the auction at CCDE last year,
and it raised, IIRC, a staggering £9.50. That's a full fifty pence over
the cost of the book, so someone got a cheap CD.

Could be. I really like the Graycat image, and if there's ever an

At the moment, there isn't one, but it's not impossible she'll make one,
given the role 57 has to play in the sequel. Ann-Cathrine's just
finished a very nice two-page illustration of a scene with Capulette,
Newra and a new villainesse which is really good. I'm a bit uncertain
of making it available yet, though, because it's a rather big spoiler.
Meanwhile, how about Nisse on a mug?

Thanks, that's good to know. Something that could work rather well, we
believe, is a set of mugs with the cartoony kittens on:
http://www.catroll-art.co.uk/index.php?image=kattunge1
to
http://www.catroll-art.co.uk/index.php?image=kattunge11
all might be nice to have on a mug, and if you can get a set with your
favourite designs they would be a rather nice gift, I think.
And of course, there's always Nisse...
http://www.catroll-art.co.uk/index.php?image=nisse1
to
http://www.catroll-art.co.uk/index.php?image=nisse3
(At the moment, only one "kattunge" picture is listed, and no "Nisse",
but that's just because I haven't got around to list them all. Since
Ann-Cathrine has been making those kitten pictures for years, some of
them with Nisse in them, there are many more to put up. I've been
thinking of writing a little script to turn them into a web-comic kind
of thing, with a new picture once a week. A bit like my weekly drabble
project at http://www.cunobaros.com/fiction/drabble/)
The problem with CafePress is that they're in the USA, and the shipping
costs to Europe are if not prohibitive at least discouraging.
Do you know of an European company providing the same kind of service as
CafePress? Primarily posters and mugs, rather than t-shirts.

Oh, I'm sure I could (and I have, in fact, made it so now), but I wasn't
aware it was an option. The W3C validation page only talks about how to
configure the server to deliver the charset info.
See, this is why I ask for advice, since I'm not a web

Bug report: in Safari/WebKit, all the thumbnails on each art page
appear on top of each other, and only the top (last) one is clickable.
As I understand it, this is correct behaviour for the CSS "float"
attribute. Strangely, though, it works with Xyle Scope, which is also
WebKit-based.
Ah! The rule for class thumbnails includes both "float: left" and
"display: inline", which is technically valid but doesn't make sense. It
seems Safari's taking the float to imply block display. In fact, it
works fine using the current nightly build of WebKit... but I don't
think the float: should be doing anything, so removing it should fix it.

They're in Germany, and they do mostly clothing, but also some other
stuff, like mugs. I've only ever bought one embroidered Polo shirt from
them, and the quality was quite good.
How about a Westala and Villtin beer stein, BTW?

Additional bug report: the thumbnails jump around as the mouse-over
border appears and disappears. Using a white border when the mouse is
away would fix this.

Argh! Okay, removing the float works fine in IE6, but doing so messes
up the regular spacing in Opera and Firefox. My gut reaction would be
to assume those two are right and IE is wrong, but I'd have thought that
if you specify the height and width of a block, that should be that.
Right. It doesn't matter much in IE if it's there or not (especially
since it doesn't care about the a:focus, hover or active settings). In
Firefox and Opera the spacing doesn't work without the float, and the a
indicators (needed for keyboard navigators) makes everything jump around
like mad.
Ho hum. So... conditional css selection? But most Operas out there
have the default setting of pretending to be IE.
Advice?

D'oh! Okay, that was also caused by having too small height and width,
which I've fixed now. I've also put a white border there, like you
suggest.
I'm still in two minds of what to do with the float:left thing, though.

Wow, she's really good[1]. The top hat in front of Kendo the

The discription of the Swedish spirit in Midsummer Tale

Thanks a lot, that looks interesting. We'll probably set up shop both
there and at CafePress, so people on both sides of the pond can shop
withouth exorbitant postage charges. Shame they don't do poster prints
there, though. You don't happen to know any place that do?

Yeah, well, but... While I have not objections to putting my face in
that general area per se, I like to have a say in *whose* area it's put
in.
If it was a free-for-all, I'd never stop speculating where my face has

Well, you could just ask that they not be wearing it at the time. Or wearing
it, depending on your opinion of the owner.
